Mission Statement

It is the mission of San Anto Cultural Arts to foster human and community development
through community-based arts.

With a fax/phone machine, a closet-turned-office, a budget of zero and a wealth of inspiration, SACA was established in August 1993 by a small group of community youth as a project of Inner City Development.

On July 16th 1994, the first issue of El Placazo was introduced and our first mural, Educación, was blessed and dedicated that same day. The Educación mural still stands as vibrant as ever at the corner of Guadalupe and Chupaderas, closing on well over a decade-and-a-half later. Originally called Inner City Cultural Arts, the group changed its name to San Anto Cultural Arts when it incorporated in February 1997 and received its non-profit status that July.

Since then we have developed an internationally recognized Mural / Public Art Program (the states only full-time, year-round community-based mural/public art program); published well over 125 issues of El Placazo Community Newspaper; established a nationally and internationally recognized neighborhood mural tour (earned-income); created assistance programs such as scholarship and financial aid workshops for our students interested in higher education; have seen San Anto alumni graduate from high school and
college and return to SACA as board and full-time staff members; established nationally recognized community projects and initiatives such as the Dia De Los Muertos Barrio Procession (honoring victims of violence), Muralist-In-Residence-Project, Teen Mentor Initiative, Mono Print Workshops, Safe Sex / Abstinence seminars for our youth and parents.
